What Is Expected Value (EV) in Blackjack?

Expected value is the single number behind every blackjack decision Blackjack Decision Lab makes โ€” here's what it means and why it matters more than any one hand.

Short answer

Expected value (EV) is the average amount you'd win or lose per dollar wagered if a decision were repeated many, many times. An EV of -0.20 means that, on average, that decision loses 20% of the amount wagered over the long run โ€” not that this specific hand will lose 20 cents.

Why one number, and not just win percentage

Win percentage alone can be misleading, because it ignores how big the wins and losses are, and it ignores pushes. EV folds win probability, push probability, lose probability, and the size of each outcome (a double pays double, a blackjack pays a bonus, a surrender only loses half the bet) into a single comparable number. That's what makes it possible to rank Hit, Stand, Double, Split, and Surrender against each other on equal footing.

A worked example

Suppose one decision has an EV of -0.20, while another has -0.35. Both are unfavorable โ€” this is blackjack, the house always has some structural edge โ€” but the first decision loses less money on average over the long run. That makes it the mathematically better choice, even though neither one is a winning play in isolation.

From EV difference to Decision Cost

The gap between the best action's EV and your chosen action's EV is what Blackjack Decision Lab calls Decision Cost. If the best action has an EV of -0.20 and your choice has an EV of -0.27, the difference โ€” 0.07 โ€” means that decision costs about 7ยข per $1 wagered in expected value. At a $10 wager, that's an estimated $0.70 of extra cost, not because you'll lose exactly 70 cents this hand, but because that's the average cost if the same weaker decision were repeated many times.

What EV can't tell you

EV describes what tends to happen over many repetitions โ€” it doesn't predict any single hand. A play with a strongly negative EV can still win the very next hand, and a play with the best available EV can still lose.
