Why Stand on 12 vs Dealer 4 in Blackjack?
Hard 12 feels too weak to stand on — but against a dealer 4, standing is correct, and hitting is the more common mistake.
Short answer
Stand. Hard 12 against a dealer 4 is one of only three dealer upcards (4, 5, and 6) where basic strategy stands on 12 instead of hitting. Against every other upcard — including 2 and 3 — the correct play is hit.
Why this one is easy to get wrong
Players often lump every low dealer upcard together and treat 2 through 6 the same way. That instinct is only half right. A dealer 4 has a meaningfully higher bust probability than a dealer 2 or 3 — the dealer must keep hitting any total under 17 with no choice in the matter, and a 4 leaves the dealer more likely to draw into a bust total than a lower upcard does. That extra bust risk is exactly what tips 12 vs 4 from “hit” to “stand.”
Why hitting is the costlier mistake here, not the safer one
A hard 12 busts on any ten-value card — the single most common card value in the deck. Hitting into that risk is only worth it when the dealer's own bust probability isn't high enough to justify waiting. Against a 4, it is high enough: letting the dealer's own upcard do the work has a better expected value than taking on unnecessary bust risk with a weak hand that can't become anything better than a decent-but-unspectacular total even on a good draw.
The narrow window this rule lives in
This is one of basic strategy's tightest windows: hard 12 stands only against dealer 4, 5, or 6. One upcard lower (dealer 3) or five upcards higher (dealer 7 and up), the correct play flips back to hit. See the full hard totals chart to check every combination at once, or read Hit or Stand for the reasoning behind the pattern.
See it change in real time
The clearest way to internalize where this line falls is to play it out. The trainer shows the probability and expected value for hard 12 against every dealer upcard, so you can see exactly where "stand" turns into "hit" as the dealer's card gets stronger.
